CHAPTER

TWELVE

In yellow rain boots, a raincoat, and an old cowboy hat, Rhetta slipped and slid in the mud as she trudged toward the barn. She was cold, wet, and very worried. They were already behind on payments and now the barn roof was leaking in two new places, and her daughter was coughing and talking about feeling hot. Rhetta took her temperature, slumping with relief that, so far, it was still 98.6. If she had to stay home from school tomorrow, she and Ronnie would have to flip a coin to see who stayed home from work. If the Zack Lacey case broke, there would be more evidence, and Rhetta wanted to be the one to process it. For Grace.

But now… warmth.

Happiness.

She stood at the entrance to the barn, loving that she owned a barn (well, along with the bank) and loving that there were animals inside it that she raised and fed and named. She put the worry away as she silently counted her blessings. Her life was filled with life. There were homeless people all over the country, all over OKC, and she and her family had one another. And their menagerie. And Grace.

She smiled faintly at the thought of Grace at a holy-roller church service and slogged through the damp to the first bucket catching the rain from the barn. It wasn't as full as she expected it to be, so there was some more good news.

Holy Cow lowed.

''How are you doing this fine evening?'' Rhetta asked her as she ran a hand down Holy Cow's flank, admiring the markings that looked like Jesus. ''Would you like to be milked?''

Holy Cow mooed. Rhetta smiled at her. ''It's going to be okay,'' she said. ''We just have to have faith.''

And from the hayloft, Earl smiled down on Rhetta.
